The original Philodendron holtonianum comes from the rain forests of Colombia. However, this variëgated version is the result of a rare genetic mutation or purposeful selection within nurseries. The variety is naturally rare, and its preservation requires careful vegetative propagation.
What makes this plant unique are its long, deeply lobed leaves growing on a shaggy stem. Variegation is irregular: in some leaves limited to subtle brush strokes, in others as broad spots or half leaves. The texture of the leaves is leathery, making it more robust than you might think at first glance. It grows like a climber and would benefit from a moss pole or climbing support.
A bright location without direct sunlight is ideal for maintaining the variety without burning the leaves. Provide well-draining, aerated potting soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid wet feet. High humidity helps the plant develop optimally, as does regular leaf care with a damp cloth. Note that variegated parts of the leaves contain less chlorophyll. Excessive pruning or neglect can cause the plant to regress to greener growth.
